Dropping Knowledge
Carolina Demography, in partnership with myFutureNC, released a statewide education dashboard at the one-year anniversary celebration of the creation of North Carolina’s attainment goal Monday. The dashboard tracks 18 performance indicators that represent transition points along the educational continuum, such as NC Pre-K enrollment, FAFSA completion rate, and labor-force participation rate. Each indicator shows where NC is currently, what the 2030 goal is, and data for the top southern state.
Carolina Demography and myFutureNC are also releasing county-level data profiles. Six county profiles are available now, and the rest of the county data will be released by June.
A New Slant
EdNC hosted a student-led town hall with five of the seven candidates for state superintendent this week, piloting a new model for the future of town halls and civic engagement. Candidates introduced themselves by telling the room who they are; watch the video here. Then we asked them to take a position, literally, on several policy statements by walking to different sides of the stage depending on whether they agreed with them or not.
Finally, candidates sat down with small groups of students and answered questions from them on issues like mental health, making the teaching profession more attractive, summer learning loss, and restorative justice. Need to Know
Applications for the Z. Smith Reynolds non-profit internship program are due on Monday, February 17. The program will offer 37 paid internships with non-profit organizations this summer. To be eligible, students must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior enrolled full-time in a North Carolina four-year college (or be a North Carolina resident enrolled full-time in a four-year college outside the state) and be Pell grant eligible. Please share with students you think might be interested!
